EDWARD WILLIS, farmer, P. 0. Carlisle, was born in Jessamine County, Ky. Our subject was raised to a life of farming and attended school but little, he not being permitted to do so except in stormy weather when he could not work. When he was only nine years of age, he tended ten acres of corn all alone. He remained at home until he was twenty- one and then for two years was engaged in cutting wood and rafting in the South. November 15, 1849, he was married to Parmelia Shake, and twelve children blessed their union, ten of whom are living - John W. born September 5, 1850; James, November 19, 1851 ; David, January 9, 1853; Richard T, July 17, 1834; Lemuel H., December 18, 1855; William D., September 9, 1857; Fannie, May 17, 1861; George B., August 16, 1864; Minnie, June 6, 1868; Artie M., April 12, 1869. Mr. Willis began life with almost nothing, but by strict economy, industry and excellent management, has become one of the largest tax-payers of Sullivan County, owning seven hundred and eighty acres of finely improved land. He has also raised considerable stock. He is an A. F. & A. M., both Blue Lodge and Royal Arch Chapter; also an I. 0. 0. F. Is a Democrat, and takes a lively interest in all public matters.

Charles is found in the 1880 census of Haddon Twp., Sullivan Co., IN. age 25, occupation is farming and he was born in IN. His wife, Elisabeth is enumerated with him and her age is 20, she was born KY. Parents in Kentucky. Also enumerated with Charles is his mother-in-law Susan Hackney, age 55, born in KY.
(My guess is that Susan Hackney is the same woman as Susan(Chowning)Cook, she must have remarried, a Susan Cook married a David Hackney October 5, 1875. It could be that Philip Cook (her first husband) died sometime between 1870 and 1875 as he is on the 1870 census records of Haddon Twp. but can not find him on the 1880 census records)

The Carlisle Democrat -Friday April 5, 1878 - Vol No. 51
-Mrs. McKinley, wife of Uncle John McKinley and Mother of the young man whose death we reported in these columns last week, is no more. She died last Sunday morning, and was buried the following day. She was somewhere near 60 years of age, and was a woman of an exceptionally good character. We have been unable to gain any particulars of her life and death, though it's presumable the latter resulted from anxiety and exposure occasioned by the illness and subsequent death of her son.

The Carlisle Democrat - March 29, 1878 - Vol. 1 No. 50
-Joseph McKinley, son of Uncle John McKinley, died rather unexpectedly on Wednesday morning.. He was about twenty-seven or twenty-eight years of age, and he is said to have been of exceptionally good character. His friends say no one in the neighborhood could be missed more than Joe will be, as he was always foremost in everything pertaining to the local welfare; was generous in his disposition and a friend to every man in need of his aid and sympathy. His death was caused by exposure consequent upon a constant attendance on a protracted meeting recently in progress in his neighborhood. He was immersed, at his own request, in a baptistry improvised from a wagon-bed, two or three hours before his death. His funeral occurred yesterday.

HISTORY OF FAIRFIELD COUNTY

CHAPTER XXXIII.

GREENFIELD TOWNSHIP.

The surface of this township is comparatively level. The soil Osgood, and much fruit, corn, and wheat are raised. Being contiguous to New Lancaster, the first settlers of the county naturally located on the green fields comprising this territory. As early as in the spring of 1798 settlements were made, and in 1799 numerous families had settled at the forks of the Hock hocking, in the Claypool neighborhood, then Yankeetown, and at the Rock mills. Of those who became prominent in early settlement of this precinct, and before the year 1800, were,Isaac Meason, Captain Joseph Steward, William M'Farland, Ralph and Jeremiah Cherry, Samuel Randall, Alexander Sanderson, Daniel Bright, Jacob Dumont, Henry Abrams, John Bailar, Adam and John Westenberger, a Mr. Nail, John M'Arthur, John Morgan, Jas. Brooks,Colonel Crooks, Drake Taylor, Isaac Rice, James Wells, and some others. Settlements had been made at the three above-named places as early as in the spring and fall of 1799. Captain Joseph Steward settled, in 1799, immediately south of Judge John Graybill's, on the Columbus pike, two miles from Lancaster. His son, Levi Steward, was born in 1800, he being the first child born in the township. Ralph and Jeremiah Cherry. William McFarlin, and Samuel Randall, were also settlers of this vicinity. They entered their land on the "squatter claim," simply, but it was afterwards put in market and sold for two dollars per acre. The Yankeetown settlement was also made in the year 1799. James Wells settled upon the present Hooker land in 1799. Jacob Claypool, the father of Isaac, bought the land in 1805. In 1799, James Brooks,Mr. Cook, and Drake Taylor, also squatted .in this vicinity. The Rock-mill settlement was made about this time also. Among those here was Michael Rice, father of Miss Van Burton. He settled immediately below the Rock mill, near the present woolen factory. This was in 1799. The first mills were established here, called the Love land Mills, now Rock Mills, built by James Loveland and Hezekiah Smith,in 1800. They erected a saw mill, a grist mill, and also were the first to sell goods in the township. They purchased their stock for trade in Detroit, and packed them from that point. This place was at that time a rendezvous for the Indians, who came from Chillicothe every year, and would always go away loaded with lead. Where they obtained it has ever been a mystery, but old residents state that they undoubtedly found it somewhere in that locality. The trade then was good, whiskey, tobacco, muslins, etc., etc. From the Indians fur was taken in exchange for goods. James Reed built a saw mill soon after this time, immediately below the Loveland Mills.

45 1907 MARION COUNTY, OHIO HISTORY
JOHN W. DOWLING, (Scott Township) a vigorous, enterprising young man, born July 15, 1853. in Illinois, whose parents, Joseph and Maria Dowling, were natives of Pennsylvania. At ten years of age, he came to live with John Hill, of this township, with whom lie remained until twenty-three, when he was married, November 28, 1876. to Miss Rachel Coulter, daughter of J. H. and Mary A. Coulter. They have one child, Elma. In 1881. he purchased forty-eight acres near the center of the township, paying $63 per acre. He is worth all of $4,000. For the past five years, Mr. D. has been renting 220 acres of Madison Monnett, which, by industry and frugality, is paving him finely. Both himself and wife are exemplary Christians. He is an Elder of the Disciple Church.

INEXCEUSABLE CARELESSNESS
The Assignee of the J.H. Coulter Estate Short in His Accounts
John W. Dowling, of Crawford County, was brought into probate court here Thursday to make some explanations in regards to his actions as assignee of the estate of J.H. Coulter, who made an assignment at Caledonia in 1886. Dowling had not filed an account in the probate court for three years, not withstanding he had $3500 in his possession that had not been accounted for. Creditors naturally became anxious to know what had become of that amount. The probate judge repeatedly cited to assignee into court and notified him to file an account, but he paid no attention to this whatever. Consequently, application was made for his removal, which was done recently and G.C. Rinker appointed trustee of the estate.
The bondsmen of Dowling were awakened in the matter and today succeeded into getting him into court, where he made the excuse of ignorance for his actions, notwithstanding his notification from the court. Of the $3500 he accounted for $2100 in vouchers, receipts and cash, but could make no explanation of what had become of the remaining $1100. Motion was made by his attorney, Monnett, of Bucyrus, to have the probate judge open up the assignees account so that he could obtain credit for the amount accounted for, but this has not been done as yet, being a question of authority with the court.
Dowlings actions are a surprise with his friends, and are criminal, whether from ignorance or not is a question. At any rate his surities are in for it to the tune of about fourteen hundred dollars at the least calculation.
