144 Isaac was a member of the Shanandoah Company of Connecticut that settled in Wyoming Valley in PA in 1763. His signature appears on various petitions regarding settlement of the Company's claim to the Pennsylvania lands. This controversy between the states of Connecticut and Pennsylvania regarding ownership of these lands continued for some 20 years and resulted in several bloody clashes. It was finally decided by the courts that these lands belonged to Pennsylvania and on 21 Apr 1787 Isaac's name appears on a 'Declaration in Support of the Laws of Pennsylvania. However, since Isaac Sr. died about this time, this signature is probably that of Isaac Jr.
In 1770 the Minutes of the meeting of the Susquehannah Company noted that Isaac Bennet of Preston, County of New London, had lost his receipt for his share in the Pennsylvania lands and had not been registered on the rolls of the Company. It was voted that he be admitted as a full share proprietor and his name be entered on the rolls.
Isaac gave the following deposition at Wilks Barre on 18 Aug 1772: Isaac Bennit of Wilks Barre in the Colony of Connecticutt of Lawful Age Testifies and says that sometime in the month of Febry in the year 1770 I was in Company w/Capt Zebulon Butlor James Foresith and a Number of Others in This Town and heard the said Forsith Say he must go to (New) London to see about his affairs there and the sd Capt Butlor told the sd Forsith in my hearing that he would send Letters by him to the Comtee of the Susquehannah Company if he would go out to Delaware the upper Road by Lackawack and Likewise told him it would not Do to go the Lower road by smithfield for the Mobb would take him & he Did not Chuse to have his Letters go that way and I afterwards heard the sd Forsith say he would run the venture of being taken going the Lower Road and I understod he Did go out the Lower Road and was taken and Confined and further saith not this Deponant. /s/ Isaac Bennit

148 Marion County Ohio - 1907 History
SIMEON BENNETT RICE, formerly sheriff of Marion County, a highly efficient official for four years, has resided on his well-improved farm in Scott township since 1899. Mr. Rice was born in Marion County, Ohio, near Caledonia, August 18, 1858, and is a son of John and Sarah (Bennett) Rice.
John Rice was born April 22, 1822, in Canaan township, in what was then Marion, but is now Morrow County, Ohio, one of the first white children born in this locality. He was a son of Jacob and Lydia (Wickizer) Rice. Jacob Rice, who, was probably born in Pennsylvania, served in the War of 1812 and came to Fairfield County, Ohio, about 1817. In 1821 he came to Marion County and secured a farm of 80 acres from the government, on which he built a log house, which, the family occupied in the following year. It was situated in a wild region and was 60 miles distant from the nearest mill, which was at Mount Vernon. His family consisted of 10 children, the one survivor being Mrs. Elizabeth Jackson, who resides with her son at Martel. Jacob Rice left all estate of 500 acres.
John Rice assisted his father in operating the latter's farm and sawmill and later, with two of his brothers, built a grist-mill which they ran to great advantage. John Rice bought a farm in Canaan township on which he lived until 1870, when he came to Scott township and until he retired lived on the farm which his son, Simeon B., now, owns. He died at Caledonia July 21, 1896. He married Sarah Bennett, who was born in 1834 at Caledonia where she died October 14, 1906. In 1835 her father, Rev. Isaac Bennett, united with the Michigan Conference and died in that State; his wife was Eleanor Barrockman. Mrs. Rice was reared in Michigan but before her marriage frequently visited kindred in Caledonia. The children of John Rice and wife were: Simeon B. , two babes that died in infancy; Ellen, who married William Weir and lives in Morrow County; Ida,who married Noah Garver, of Morrow County; and Cora, who married James Noblet. All living members of the family with the exception of Simeon B., live in Canaan township, Morrow County. John Rice was a Democrat in his political views and held a number of local offices.
Simeon B. Rice was 12 years old when he came to Scott township. He was educated in the Caledonia schools and at Buchtel College, Akron. For some years he followed farming and stock-raising, also dealing in stock. In 1884 he left the farm and removed to Marion, where he filled the office of deputy sheriff for eight years. In 1892 he was elected sheriff on the Democratic ticket and served for four years in this responsible office. For two years after his retirement from office he continued to reside at Marion, although he still kept the management of the farm in his own hands, and then returned to the farm where the free, open door life has restored his failing health. He carries on a general line of farming and is also an agent for fertilizers.
On October 23, 1890, Mr. Rice was married to Flora Ruehrmund, who was born at Caledonia, and is a daughter of Ferdinand Christian and Mary (Loebrick) Ruehrmund, both of whom were born in Germany. For many years the father of Mrs. Rice was a dry-goods merchant at Marion and was also connected with banking institutions. He died October 24, 1884, at Marion, where he was interred. His widow still survives, at the age of 78 years. Mr. and Mrs. Rice have four children, namely: Anna Marie, born at Marion, October 26, 1891 ; Inez May, born April 16, 1893; Marion F., born September 18, 1895; and Edith Rose, born June 4, 1897. Mr. Rice is a member of Oliver Lodge, No. 447, F. & A. at Caledonia.

Marion Daily Star 1885 September 2
Deputy Sherrif S.B. Rice came over from Caledonia this morning and will remain to assist Sherrif Beckley until after the October term of court.
Marion Daily Star 1888 September 1
Deputy Sherrif Rice drove out to the farm of Robert Burt on Tuesday afternoon and arrested a farm hand working there, named Ed Wiltsie, on the charge of Grand Larceny. Wiltsie's offense seems to have been committed at Olathe, Kas., where he sold a cart after having promised the cart as security to a fellow of whom he borrowed $15. That seems a trivial offense for an arrest requiring requisition papers and all the expense of taking the fellow back to Kansas, and we doubt if much comes out of it.

149 Marion County Ohio - 1907 History
THOMAS A. GRUBER, mayor of Caledonia and a leading attorney and business man of the village, was born January 17, 1868 at Marits, Morrow County, Ohio, and is a son of Christian and Elizabeth (Leonard) Gruber.
Christian Gruber, who is a well-known resident of Marits, Ohio, was born in Marion County, and is a son of John Gruber, a prominent pioneer of the county, who entered the land where the County Infirmary is situated. Christian Gruber married Elizabeth Leonard, a native of Morrow County, Ohio, and a daughter of Isaac Leonard, who came from Virginia about 1820. Four children were born, to the parents of our subject, Thomas A.; John, a resident of Columbus, Ohio; and Homer and Elzy, residents of Marits. Mrs. Gruber died September 25, 1890, at Marits, when in her 48th year.
Thomas A. Gruber was reared at Marits until 16 years of age, when he entered Otterbein University from which he was graduated in 1889 with a degree of Bachelor of Arts. He subsequently secured a legal education, under the preceptorship, of Judge Powell, of Mount Gilead, and was admitted to the bar in October, 1897, after which he practiced law for two years in Mount Gilead. He then went to New York where he was located for four years engaged in the collection business, being associated with the Hess Publishing Company of that city. In 1903 he came to Caledonia and engaged in the general practice of his profession. He is also interested in the insurance and real estate business.
Soon after he became a resident of Caledonia, Mr. Gruber was appointed village clerk, in which capacity he served for one year. In 1904 he was a candidate for the office but was defeated. In November,1905, he was elected mayor of Caledonia on the Democratic ticket, in which capacity he is still serving. Fraternally, Mr. Gruber is a member of the Knights of Pethias lodge at Mount Gilead, the Masonic lodge at Caledonia, the Odd Fellows lodge at Marits and the Eagles' aerie at Galion.
Mr. Gruber was united in marriage December 19, 1906, with Effie Coulter, who was born near Kirkpatrick, Marion County, Ohio, and is a daughter of Harvey and Mary (Carmean) Coulter. Mr. Coulter was one of the old pioneers of the county, coming here with his parents in the'20's. His death occurred at Bucyrus, where he had been living in retirement for some time. His widow still survives and is a resident of Caledonia.
